I tested this changes with an older version of PostgreSQL and it worked.

# pkg_info -xI postgresql
postgresql-client-8.2.9 PostgreSQL database (client)
postgresql-server-8.2.9 The most advanced open-source database available
anywhere

I will upgrade my database to 8.3 and check if I could reproduce the
problem.
